RockCreek | Seafood & Spirits

After visiting RockCreek Seafood & Spirits for the 3rd time, and getting a Fox Hole and Kari Out Kalamari every single time, I decided it was time to share this jewel.  Easily missed, RockCreek is tucked behind Uneeda Burger just off of Fremont Ave on N 43rd Street, but don’t be fooled, their cozy deck with fire pit and all is not to be missed!

My mom originally read about RockCreek back in June, and after she checked in out, she deemed it a must go; and added that if she could, she would go every week!  When I finally made it, I had to agree with her.  It is instantly warm and welcoming, be it a perfect summer evening, or a rainy, dreary fall afternoon.  The bar is cozy, with great bartenders that are more than happy to give drink and dinner suggestions, which I love (our favorite is Travis) and the atmosphere is laid back and unassuming!

Hands down our favorite drink on the menu is the Fox Hole.  It’s a perfect twist on a classic and one of my favs: the Manhattan.  The Fox Hole is a mixture of James E Pepper 1776 Rye, Cocchi Barolo Chinato, New Deal Ginger Liqueur, and Scrappy’s Orange Bitters.  It is served up it a beautiful cocktail glass, so smooth, and so freaking good!  The rye is not overpowering in any way, because of how chilled they serve the cocktail.  I could drink them all night, sadly I don’t, but seriously, any rye or bourbon fan cannot pass this up!

I have also branched out, and tried a couple other drinks RockCreek has to offer, and they do not disappoint.  Both are very different from each other and from the Fox Hole, but are great in their own right.  A newer addition to the menu is the Boston Molasses Disaster:  Calvados, Cocchi vermouth di Torino, Angostura, Blackstrap Molasses syrup, and Rock.  I loved it.  It was simple and delicious, reminding me of an Old Fashioned, but with brandy rather than bourbon.  The addition and look of the “Rock” was great too.  I love when bourbon is served with an over sized ice-cube: it is great presentation and a single large cube melts more slowly than a number of smaller ones .  Another great, and somewhat surprising cocktail, is the Amoxicillin (they also really hit it out of the park with their cocktail names).  The Amoxicillin is a mix of Bank Note 5yr Scotch, New Deal Ginger Liqueur, lemon juice, and clover honey.  This was nothing like what I expected, but I really liked it.  When I read honey and ginger I immediately thought sweet, but the lemon was the predominate flavor, resulting in a light and refreshing drink!  I was totally and pleasantly surprised!

It’s not just their drinks that are fabulous; the food is just as amazing!  Plus it’s never good to drink on an empty stomach, so make sure to fill up!  Since seafood is in the name, it is hard to go wrong ordering seafood.  Every seafood dish I have had, and every dish in general, has been out of this world.  The menu changes slightly day to day, depending on what is fresh and available.

A staple though, and my number one recommendation, is the Kari Out Kalamari.  This is where the foodie in me busts out, but this is simply mouth-watering.  I have never had anything like it, and I cannot get enough.  The presentation is spot on, down to the carry out box and chop sticks, and the flavors are unreal.  It makes the perfect appetizer to share for the table!

The food at RockCreek  has forced me to try fish that I would never have tried before hand; mainly because I recognize maybe half of it.  The do not have your typical fish selections: no salmon, no halibut, no swordfish, but it doesn’t matter.  I have tried cod (green and black), redfish and bass, and they all have been delicious:  one was savory, the other delicate, and one in a crazy good broth.  Each dish is prepared differently and they all sound so incredible, it’s hard to decide what to order, but I don’t believe it is possible to go wrong!

My final two cents about the food at RockCreek is that it is always a good idea to end the night with a sweet treat.  Do not miss the RockCreek S’mores!  Trust me, just do it.  You won’t regret it!

Needless to say, if you are in the neighborhood, in town, or just in the mood for a great cocktail and some really amazing food, get over to RockCreek.  Sit at the bar, order a Fox Hole and watch how the bar tenders makes it, ask questions, and savor every sip.  Split the Kari Out Kalamari and prepare to be drooling for the rest of the night.  There is nothing not to love!
