Whiskey

Whiskey originated from a gaelic word, meaning the “water of life.”

Whiskey comes from barley, which is perfectly suited for fermentation, due to the large amount of starch that is stored in each seed of the grain.  Once the barley is malted, meaning water is added to the grains to begin the germination process to allow starch to be broken down to simple sugars, the germination process is halted by drying the seeds.  To be considered Scottish whiskey, this drying process is done using peat smoke, which infuses a distinct flavor into the germinated seeds.  Once the barley is dried, it is then mixed with water and yeast to allow the sugars to ferment, and then the beer-like liquid is further distilled into whiskey.
