Pick Your Poison

I have definitely been that person, where when I sit down at the bar my mind goes blank and I have absolutely no idea what I feel like or what I want to order. Sweet, sour, savory, dry, a nice burn? It can be down right overwhelming. I find that sometimes the best place to start is by taking a step back, and rather than picking exactly what drink you want, decide what spirit you’re in the mood for, and go from there.

Once you pick what you feel like, it’s fun to know what makes one alcohol different from the next.  What makes bourbon different from Kentucky bourbon or whiskey?  How is gin made?  What kind of agave is used to make tequila?  It is here when you can just pick your liquor and call it all good, or take a second and learn exactly what it is you’re drinking.  It’s something I always think about:  where did this come from and what gives it that intoxicating flavor I love so much!

Bourbon

Gin

Whiskey

I am using Amy Stewart’s simple and straightforward breakdown of liquors and what differentiates them from her book The Drunken Botanist.  If you like what you read check it out!  It is a great read and packed with way more information and fun facts that I have here.
