My love of cooking and being in the kitchen comes from my mom and her family. When I was little, my family would go back to my grandmother’s house in Michigan every summer for 2 weeks and all of my mother’s side of the family would be there. There truly is nothing like a Michigan summer on the Great Lakes, but more memorable than that, was the time spent in the kitchen. The elaborate meals my mom and her sisters would create every night for us. I would spend hours watching them cook, and one thing they never went without was a drink.
It was social, a time for them to enjoy themselves and reminisce about their childhood after a long day in the sun on the beach. I particularly remember the sound of the blender, when my aunt would make whisky sours, and the crystal glasses my mom would pull out from the cupboard. Perfect on the rocks glasses with lime green, royal blue and gold leaf details; the frothy drink about to pour over the side.
It is these memories of warm and fun-filled summers that sparked me to begin recreating old classics and trying new recipes in my own kitchen. It is exciting to find a new combination, hunt down the ingredients and whip one up to try; noting what I like and what I would do differently next time. If there is one thing I learned from my mother in the kitchen, it’s that a recipe is never complete unless you give it your own twist. I now have my own set of crystal coupes given to me from my grandmother, and I never hesitate to grace them with a new concoction!
