There’s a certain level of satisfaction walking into a restaurant and spotting two open seats at the bar. I prefer the intimate, laid-back atmosphere, where it’s normal to chat with the bartender or neighbor, who is most likely a complete stranger. Some of my favorite meals and cocktails have come by the recommendation of total strangers at the counter of the bar, be it a fellow guest or the bartender himself.
You also are able to watch the bartender at work; and ask what exactly he is doing, and why, and what drink is he making again? I always let my curiosity get the best of me and ask questions. There are so many tricks and tips and it’s fun to learn them and then share them.
Once I began making my own drinks, I paid closer attention to the bar menu whenever I went out. I always looked at the different and unique flavor combinations that were popping up on menus and use that as inspiration to recreate those at home. I continue to ask the bartender questions, whenever I see him grab a bottle I don’t recognize or a tool I’m unfamiliar with. I am constantly finding new bars and restaurants to check out, as well as revisiting old favorites!
