Ladies who lunch; my mom and I have always been big fans of lunch. I remember when I was in second grade and she’d pick me up from school to get fish sandwiches from Daley’s (sadly, no longer with us), to letting me skip school in high school to see Means Girls and grab a bite, to now always going to lunch for any occasion big or small. We love trying new places and getting a feel for a spot we may have heard about. It can also be quick and dirty for our busy schedules. Get in and get out, but still get a great meal.

That’s exactly what we did at Fonda la Catrina. My mom had been wanting me to try their seriously amazing Mexican food for about a month now. Tucked away down south in Georgetown, Fonda la Catrina is definitely worth the drive. Right by the highway on Airport Way and Doris, and across the street from the remodeled Frans Chocolate Factory is some of the best and most unique Mexican food and beverages I’ve ever had.

We walked in and found 2 seats at the bar and ordered some chips and salsa to get things going. No Mexican experience is complete without chips, salsa and guac. A little something salty to much with Margs is essential, and I usually judge a place by how good the basics are. The salsa was good but the guacamole was great, especially with the homemade chips.

Once we got some snacks, moved on to the cocktails, naturally we ordered margaritas. I ordered the Pepino Margarita: deliciously cool and refreshing because of the muddled cucumber. They use a silver tequila for the Pepino, and mix it with cucumber, lime, house made sour mix and top it off with a chile-salt rim! My mom ordered the Jalapeño Margarita, which had tequila, muddle jalapeño, lime, orange bitters, and Grand Marnier. Really tasty, but with a definite kick! A word of caution though: this marg MUST be drank through the straw! Both my mom and I took a sip from the rim to get some salt and our lips were burning for a while. Once we used the straw though it was much more enjoyable.

For lunch we decided to each order and entree and split them. We lucked out, because their special was the Pozoie Verde, which people come special for and they usually sell out of before dinner time. It is a savory soup, with pulled pork and garbanzo beans, toped with radishes. It was so unbelievably good, I had a hard time giving it up to swap plates with my mom, but I’m so happy I did. We also ordered the Enchiladas de Mole Pablano Chorizo with a fried egg. It’s not on the menu, but the first time my mom came, her waiter told her this is what the owner orders, and what he believes is the best dish they make. So, don’t forget to add the fried egg on top! It was seriously unlike anything I have ever had; the sweet mole with the spicy chorizo and richness of the egg was actually to die for. And paired perfectly with the margaritas!

Once we finished our meals, and felt about ready to pop, we asked the bartender what her favorite drink was. She said sangria. Both my mom and I replied with we aren’t sangria fans, but she won us over. Instead of letting the fruit sit in wine for a few days, she muddled the fresh fruit right in the glass, added some orange juice and a splash a seltzer. We split one, and it was the biggest surprise of the meal. The fresh sangria tasted more like a punch and less like an old wine, and was so refreshing, I would even order it again!

I cannot wait to go back to Fonda la Catrina and bring everyone I know. It’s the kind of place you have a hard time ordering because every item on the menu, beverage and food alike, sounds so good. I will definitely be sharing every meal there so I can try a little bit of everything!
